In 1949 a group of parents banded together to find a way to provide services for their children with intellectual and developmental disabilities when no such services existed. They ran and ad in the local newspaper announcing that there would be a meeting at the Red Bank Borough Hall. An association emerged from the meeting that has evolved into a large and growing agency, The Arc of Monmouth. Our mission today remains focused on persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
Annually, The Arc of Monmouth serves over 1,400 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in 25 locations throughout Monmouth County. The Arc provides employment, vocational, and educational services, adult training, community living programs, health care, social services and an abundance of enriching recreational activities.
These programs and supports are designed to assist individuals with intellectual disabilities with living, learning, working and playing as integrated members of the community. Thanks to the training they receive at The Arc of Monmouth, many individuals are now working in the community, paying taxes and feeling a new sense of accomplishment and pride. Others reside in apartments or group homes with assistance from The Arc and hundreds participate each year in recreational activities. We are committed to continuing to assist persons with developmental disabilities to thrive within their homes, schools, workplaces and neighborhoods … within their lives.
Mission of The Arc of Monmouth
The mission of The Arc of Monmouth is to improve the lives of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. This is accomplished through advocacy services and supports, cooperation with community partners and community education. The Arc of Monmouth also works to prevent the causes and effects of intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Vision Statement
The activities of The Arc of Monmouth will lead to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities residing, learning, working, worshiping, recreating and socializing in quality inclusive settings of their own choosing. Families of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities will be well informed and confident of community support.
