volunteer-based organization devoted to life-long issues of intellectual

joins chapters of The Arc across the state in a media and public
awareness campaign aimed at bringing attention to issues concerning
people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their
families, for the 29th consecutive year.
To recognize Arc
Awareness Month, The Arc of Monmouth will be erecting displays at some
libraries throughout Monmouth County including information about Arc
programs and services and general information about intellectual and
developmental disabilities. Thirty-eight Monmouth County towns have
committed to reading proclamations at their council meetings deeming
March as Arc Awareness Month. Those towns are: Aberdeen, Belmar,
Brielle, Colts Neck, Eatontown, Englishtown, Fair Haven, Farmingdale,
Freehold, Hazlet, Holmdel, Howell, Keansburg, Keyport, Lake Como, Little

Borough, Spring Lake Heights, Tinton Falls, Union Beach, Wall, and West

“Arc Awareness Month
is an opportunity for our community to find out more about intellectual
and developmental disabilities. It’s also a great chance to learn more
about the importance of full inclusion in community life and how
diversity is essential to our culture and to our neighbors,” said Mary
E. Scott, executive director. “The Arc takes this opportunity to
express our thanks to those in Monmouth County who’ve been our strong
supporters, and to invite others to learn more about us and our mission
during March and every month of the year.”
The Arc of Monmouth
serves more than 1,400 individuals with intellectual and developmental
disabilities each year with education, vocational training, residential
services, health care, supported employment, recreation, social

December
7, 2007 – The Arc of Monmouth held its 41st Winter Glow
Ball at the Shore Casino on Friday, December 7th. Over 350
guests filled the rooms in their stunning attire, eating delicious food
and dancing the night away to festive music.
For the first time
in the ball’s history, The Arc honored three individuals: Jack Privetera
of Fair Haven; Junior Honoree, Mara Bey of Oceanport; and Roxanne Oka of
Eatontown, an individual served by The Arc of Monmouth.
Mr. Privetera has
been involved with The Arc for many years, carrying out the work of the
Countess Anatole Buxhoveden through The Anabel Foundation named in honor
of the Countess’ daughter. He is a valued friend and supporter of The
Arc.
Miss Bey was
honored for her local philanthropy and entrepreneurship. She started her
own business, “Crabby Mara,” in order to raise money for the Kortney
Rose Foundation, which helps to fight pediatric brain tumors. A round of
applause and a standing ovation followed her speech.
Ms. Oka was
recognized for her Citizenship Award. Not only is she an invaluable
volunteer to The Arc of Monmouth, but also to her church and the
community.
Winter Glow Ball
chairperson Mrs. Anita Roselle of East Manasquan was presented with a
gift from the Executive Committee, or “the Tuesday Group,” as they are
called, expressing thanks for her wonderful leadership and hard work.
“We were thrilled to have three honorees this year for the first time,”
said Mrs. Anita Roselle. “Each one has a remarkable relationship with
The Arc and we could not think of a better way to celebrate our future.”
Held
every December, the Winter Glow Ball is the largest fundraiser of the
year for The Arc of Monmouth. "This ball was another fabulous affair,
thanks to the work of Chairman Anita Roselle and the other ladies of the
Tuesday Group. We greatly appreciate their efforts. Congratulations
again to the award winners, Jack Privetera, Mara Bey, and Roxanne Oka,"
said Mary Scott, Executive Director.

April 25, 2007 -
On Wednesday, April 19, 2007 Arc Resources
Unlimited, a program of The Arc of Monmouth, celebrated the opening of
an art gallery at the Freehold Raceway Mall in the presence of more than
125 visitors including the featured artists, Vimala Gade, Gabriella
Gonzalez, Melinda Hall, Laurie Homan, Belle Hsu, Lois Monaghan, Barbara
Snyder & students from the High Point Adolescent School, Morganville, NJ
and the Rugby School, Wall, NJ.
State Senator Ellen
Karcher attended the reception and presented a joint legislative
resolution honoring The Arc of Monmouth and VSA arts of New Jersey for
making possible the gallery opening. Also in attendance were the Mayor
of Freehold Township, Dorothy Avallone, Freehold Township Committee
Member Anthony Ammiano, Frank Lucia, Sr. Property Manager, and Debra
Panzarella, Sr. Marketing Manager, both from the Freehold Raceway Mall,
and several members of the Optimist Club.
Jere Cognetta,
Assistant Executive Director of The Arc of Monmouth, in her opening
remarks explained to the guests that in 1993 The Arc of Monmouth was
given a wonderful opportunity to open a job training and placement
program at the Freehold Raceway Mall by the Wilmorite Corporation,
previous owners of the Mall. Since that time Arc Resources Unlimited
has been looking for the right retail operation to house in the
storefront; one that would complement the job training and placement
services offered at this site. Thea Strong, Director of Employment
Services, found information on VSA arts of New Jersey. Both
organizations quickly recognized that they shared a common goal - to
enrich and promote the creative energies of individuals with
disabilities - and they decided to collaborate on this project. The
opening of the gallery is a realization of that goal.
In December 2004 the
Macerich Company acquired the Freehold Raceway Mall and Jere Cognetta
thanked them for showing their support of The Arc’s mission by allowing
Arc Resources Unlimited to continue its presence at the mall location.
Vanessa Young,
Executive Director of VSA arts of New Jersey explained that they are a
part of the international VSA arts network, an affiliate of the John F.
Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Founded in
1978, VSA arts of New Jersey is dedicated to promoting the creative
power of people with disabilities. Statewide programming and services
include arts education, professional development, award competitions,
exhibits, festivals and performances.
Thea Strong expressed
her observations, and said, “Many of us still focus on the disability
rather than the skills and talents of each person. Consequently we
frequently underestimate the potential and accomplishments of people who
have a disability.” She quoted one of the featured artists, Lois
Monaghan, who said: “My disability has taught me to use all of my other
senses to cherish each day; to appreciate all the beauty around me; to
have patience, compassion and faith; to treat each obstacle as a
challenge to overcome; and to find the strength I never knew I had.”
The gallery will
continue to feature art created by individuals who have disabilities.
Different exhibits as well as sales of retail art will be offered.
The gallery will be
open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm. In the future Arc
hopes to identify funding to hire staff to increase the business hours
to include weekends and evenings.
For more information
including how artists with disabilities can have their work featured,

Services at (732) 866-0435, or Vanessa Young, Executive Director of VSA

ARC RESOURCES UNLIMITED AND VSA ARTS OF NJ
March 20, 2007 -
Arc Resources Unlimited (ARU), a program of The Arc of Monmouth, and VSA
arts of New Jersey announce their collaboration on a new art gallery at
the Freehold Raceway Mall, featuring work by artists with disabilities.
The gallery will offer exhibits, receptions with the artists, workshops,
and open house gatherings. Soon the gallery will add retail sale of
artwork at this major shopping destination in the heart of Monmouth
County.
ARU has been
providing employment services in the Freehold Raceway Mall since the
opening of the Mall in 1986. ARU’s team of professionals assists people
who have disabilities in finding a job, reflective of their skills,
abilities and talents and continues support during the training process,
and on an as needed basis, after the person has become successfully
employed.
In ARU’s quest to
promote the skills, talents, and dreams of people with disabilities, the
collaboration with VSA arts of New Jersey was a natural progression.
VSA arts
of New Jersey is a part of the international VSA arts network, an
affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in
Washington, DC. Founded in 1978, VSA arts of New Jersey is dedicated to
promoting the creative power of people with disabilities. Programs and
services including arts education, professional development, award
competitions, festivals and performances are offered throughout the
state. A major component of the organization’s work involves
programming for young people with autism.
In November of 2006, the gallery opened its first
exhibit featuring the artistic talents of the students of the Rugby
School of Wall Township and the students of the High Point Adolescent
School in Morganville. Photographs reflecting the Creed of the Optimist
Club, by students of the Rugby School, followed.
The Arc of Monmouth’s Director of Employment
Services, Thea Strong, said: “ The future of our gallery is promising!
We have been working closely with the management of the Freehold Raceway
Mall in making this all possible. The previous owners of The Freehold
Raceway Mall generously provided us the space to conduct our services,
and we are very appreciative that the Macerich Company understands the
importance of our mission and agreed to continue this wonderful
tradition.”
The gallery is
located at the Freehold Raceway Mall on the upper level next to the
Sears Department Store.
Members of the
public are invited to come to see the latest exhibit, the art for retail
sale, and meet the ARU staff.
The official opening
celebration of the gallery is scheduled for Wednesday April 18, 2007,
with an Open House from 11AM–5PM and a Reception from 5PM until 8PM.
Advance registration is required for the reception. The celebration
will feature exhibits, beautiful works of arts and an opportunity to
meet the artists.

February 21, 2007 – The Arc of Monmouth, an

The Arc of Monmouth joins chapters of The Arc across the state in a

issues concerning people with mental retardation and their families for
the 28th consecutive year.
To recognize Arc Awareness Month, The
Arc of Monmouth will be erecting displays at a few libraries throughout
Monmouth County about The Arc of Monmouth including information about
the programs and services available, literature about Arc and general
information about mental retardation. A proclamation was read by Mayor
Peter Maclearie at the February 8 public township meeting in Tinton
Falls designating the month of March 2007 as Arc Awareness Month in
Tinton Falls.
“Arc Awareness Month is an opportunity
for our community to find out more about mental retardation and related
developmental disabilities. It’s also a great chance to learn more
about the importance of full inclusion in community life and how
diversity is essential to our culture and to our neighbors,” said Mary
E. Scott, executive director. “The Arc takes this opportunity to
express our thanks to those in Monmouth County who’ve been our strong
supporters, and to invite others to learn more about us and our mission
during March and every month of the year."

February
9, 2007- When a good worker
finds a job that is a perfect fit, everyone benefits. This was the case
for Elkin, a Freehold man who obtained employment at the Cornerstone
Café in his hometown through Arc Resources, part of The Arc of
Monmouth’s employment services.
“This job was
the perfect match for Elkin,” said Thea Strong, Director of Employment,
adding, “People like Elkin. His supervisors and the customers,
especially the ‘regulars,’ are very happy with his work.”
Elkin began
his work at Cornerstone with the assistance of his job coach, Paulina
Olech. Initially, he learned his basic job duties, and it was a very
short time before his initiative to take on new tasks began to shine
through. A rapid learner, Elkin quickly earned the nickname of “Radar,”
taken from the character on M*A*S*H*, due to his quick and accurate
memory.
According to
Thea, the secret of Elkin’s success was a combination of his personality
and the fact that he was receiving acknowledgement for his good work.
“If no one gives that acknowledgement, it is very hard for people,” Thea
said. “Workers need motivation in order to be a success.” She said
that working through Arc Resources, Elkin received recognition for his
efforts and as a result began taking on new responsibilities as well as
developing relationships on the job.
Arc
Resources, part of Arc’s Employment department, prides itself on finding
the right position for the right person. A people person such as Elkin
likes to be visible and to get a chance to work with the public.
Customers respond favorably to Elkin’s courteous “Good afternoon, how
are you?” One customer raved about Elkin’s initiative to pull out her
chair for her at the table, adding that she hadn’t received that kind of
service in years.
Paulina Olich
described Elkins’ work as “excellent.” “Elkin’s supervisor never has to
tell him what to do,” Paulina said. “He’s very independent. He looks
around for things to do, and his boss never has to direct him, or repeat
a request.”
Paulina
explained that Elkin quickly became comfortable with his stated job
duties, those of a busperson, when he started his job last summer. His
skills led to an expanded repertoire and variety in his workday.
According to
Paulina, Elkin now greets and seats customers—“there are a lot of
regulars who know him, and he feels good about that,” she said—and makes
deliveries to adjacent offices. “These were not his original
responsibilities,” Paulina explained, “but now the wait staff consider
Elkin a full-fledged member of the team.”
He continues
with his original duties as well, quickly and efficiently busing and
cleaning tables. The positive responses of his supervisor, co-workers
and customers provide the inspiration for Elkin to continue to provide
top-notch service. Paulina echoed Thea in describing Elkin’s
employment at Cornerstone as a perfect job match.
Elkin’s
placement is a shining example of the services that Arc Resources
provides, which prove beneficial to served individuals, employers in the
community…and patrons such as those at Cornerstone Café, who look
forward to enjoying Elkin’s graciousness and efficiency.

CONSIDER ARC OF SATURDAY
May 2005 - Although it would be nice

Anyone of any age who wants to attend is invited. The marked path
around the lake at Bucks Mill Park offers walkers the chance to walk as
little as a half mile or as many as five miles, in addition to enjoying

Up For The Arc Walk has been lucky for several consecutive years
with good weather and a great turnout.

annual walk. Saturday, May 20th is the day to clear your
calendars and join many others at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck for a
morning of wholesome fun and great food and friends.
The Arc of Monmouth provides services and supports
to persons with mental retardation and their families. The walk at

Walkers earn funds for The Arc while enjoying the surroundings in a

they can choose to walk as little as a half mile or as many as five
miles, in addition to hours of good tunes and the great outdoors.
Last year, Joyce LoGuidice of Morganville and her
daughter Jacqueline enjoyed the day with some of their friends who told
them about the walk. Joyce LoGuidice told us, “The walk is a
spectacular experience. From the balloon arch to the beautiful park
grounds and the enthusiasm shared by all, this is an experience to
remember.” Her daughter agreed, “This walk was low key, had good food
and music and I’d definitely come back.”
Last year’s walk raised over $44,000 for Arc’s
services. Recipients of this fundraiser were individuals with
disabilities who utilize Arc’s various programs. The programs include
supported employment, vocational training, supervised and supportive
living, health care, social services and recreation.
Denyse Cowdrick of Brick attended the 2005 walk
with her team, the Gopher Girls. The team fundraised prior to the walk
and also joined in the fun the day of the event. “I was taken back by
the turnout at the park,” Cowdrick said. “It was really exciting to see
the bulletin displaying how much money was raised through this event,
especially because I knew I helped out.”
Statewide
sponsors for the 8th annual walk in Colts Neck include

December 2005 –
On the evening of December 2, the Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands was
alive with festive music, beautiful outfits, delicious food and supporters
of The Arc of Monmouth. It was time, once again, for the Winter Glow
Ball.
Held every December for the past 39 years,
the Winter Glow Ball benefits The Arc of Monmouth’s programs and services
for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. This
year, 10% of the final proceeds will go to help individuals with
developmental disabilities and their families affected by Hurricane
Katrina.
This year’s honoree was Stacey Cooper of
Colts Neck whose brother is a participant in The Arc of Monmouth’s
programs. “The Arc has helped Gary and my family so much,” Ms. Cooper
said to the crowd of over 300, “I am honored and humbled to receive this
award.” Ms. Cooper is a strong supporter of The Arc of Monmouth, serving
on both the General and Executive Committees of the ball, and was honored
for her years of dedication, support and service.
“We were thrilled to honor Stacey this
year,” said Anita Roselle of East Manasquan, Chairman of the Winter Glow
Ball. “She is one of our own. She is our friend and has a personal
relationship with Arc. We couldn’t think of a better person to
recognize.”
The Winter Glow Ball wouldn’t be possible
without the tireless efforts of the extraordinary group of women who plan
the event each year. The Executive Committee, or “Tuesday Group” as they
are called are: Anita Roselle, Chairman; Francine Acquaviva, Mollie
Giamanco and Joan Mitchell, Holmdel; Beverly Annarella, Tinton Falls;
Holly Boylan, Red Bank; Joan Colondrillo, Brigantine; Stacey Cooper and
Roberta Sharpe-Drout, Colts Neck; Arleen Fina, Middletown; Christine Fink,
Atlantic Highlands; Michele Manzella, Freehold; Karen Rafiqi, Ocean;
Jacqueline Royal, Long Branch and Vivian Ruggiero, Little Silver.
“The Arc of Monmouth is grateful to the
Tuesday Group for planning and executing yet another spectacular Winter
Glow Ball,” said Mary Scott, Executive Director. “Their efforts combined
with all of our sponsors, underwriters and supporters is what makes this
event such a success every year.”
New this year to the event was the melodious
voice of Colleen Ciecurra, President of the Circle of Friends Club, a
social club for served individuals at The Arc of Monmouth, who sang the
Star Spangled Banner to start the evening. A thunderous round of applause
followed. The winners of the $2000 shopping spree at the Short Hills Mall
and the Giant 50/50 were also pulled from the large bins of raffle
tickets. A glorious time was had by all.

September 2005 – The Arc of
Monmouth is gearing up for its 39th Anniversary Winter Glow
Ball being held on December 2, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at the Shore Casino in
Atlantic Highlands. This year, The Arc will honor Stacey Cooper of Colts
Neck, a former Mrs. World and strong supporter of The Arc of Monmouth.
“I am
thrilled to be honored this year. My brother, Gary, and my entire family
benefit from the programs and services that The Arc offers. He is a
confident, well-rounded, good-hearted soul because of the support he
receives from The Arc. I have seen him grow immensely over the years,”
Ms. Cooper said.
To
kick off the planning of this event, a cocktail party was held at the home
of Mr. & Mrs. Rocco and Vivian Ruggiero of Little Silver. The General
Committee, to the Ball was invited to the party, where they met Ms.
Cooper, also a member of the General Committee and her brother. New
members were introduced to old members, and Chairman Anita Roselle of Fair
Haven stressed the importance of the Ball. The largest fundraiser The Arc
of Monmouth holds, the Winter Glow Ball helps support many programs that
The Arc of Monmouth provides.
In light of
the recent tragedy related to hurricane Katrina, The Arc of the United
States has started a fund to help people with disabilities and their
families. The Arc of the United
States will channel 100% of all funds donated to those affected. There
will be no overhead costs deducted and funds will be used to meet the most
immediate needs of food, clothing, medicine and shelter.
As
always, a spectacular live and silent auction are planned for the Winter
Glow Ball in addition to the Giant $100 50/50 Raffle and $5 Raffle for a
$2,000.00 shopping spree at the Short Hills Mall.

August 2005 – The Arc of Monmouth recently
responded to the Trenton Backpack Challenge issued by the State of New
Jersey to benefit New Jersey’s Foster Children.
The challenge was issued early this summer
with the backpacks to be delivered the last week in July to Trenton. The
drop-off places for the backpacks were mobile units known as the “New
Jersey Foster Children’s Winnebagos.”
The Arc of Monmouth responded to the
challenge. In addition to staff and families, The Arc of Monmouth’s Adult
Services Self-Advocacy Group (SAG) members got involved. The SAG group is
a group of adults with developmental disabilities who meet as a group to
discuss and act on their rights. In the interest of preserving the rights
of others, the group also frequently engages in beneficial community
activities.
Group members, accompanied by staff of The
Arc of Monmouth, went to all of Arc’s day program locations to pick up
items which had been purchased and donated by staff and family members of
served individuals. These included school supplies, toys, baby
necessities and, of course, backpacks. Along with a number of
participants from Adult Services, the Self-Advocates then took the
backpacks, stuffed with the other items, to one of the Foster Children’s
Winnebagos near the War Memorial in Trenton.
In the past the SAG has performed
community projects for the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS),
the Count Basie Learning Branch of the Community YMCA, Tsunami Relief and
The Arc of Monmouth’s own Hersh High School.
The Arc of Monmouth serves 1,350
individuals with mental retardation and their families each year with
education, vocational training, residential services, health care,
supported employment, recreation, social services and advocacy.

July 2005 –
Department of Human Services (DHS) Commissioner James M. Davy, Division of
Developmental Disabilities Director (DDD) Carol Grant and other DDD
employees toured programs of The Arc of Monmouth on July 25. Their first
stop was the Ambulatory Care Center in Tinton Falls, where more than 800
persons with mental retardation and related disabilities receive health
care and mental health services. Commissioner Davy spoke with Arc’s
Director of Health Services, Leone Murphy and psychologist Nancy Razza
about their groundbreaking group therapy sessions for persons with mental
retardation, and the psychiatric, behavioral and individual counseling
services offered at the Ambulatory Care Center. Through internships at
the center, other professionals are introduced to considerations when
providing health and mental health care to this population, noted Murphy.
Davy and Grant later
visited two adult training centers The Arc of Monmouth operates in Wall
Township. “These centers serve persons with multiple disabilities,”
stated Arc executive director Mary Scott. “The Shore program cares for 15
persons who have serious physical or health needs in addition to a
developmental disability, and the Green Grove Center offers services for
persons with mental health or behavioral needs as well as a cognitive
disability.” The staffing in these centers is more intensive than that at
other adult training centers funded by DDD in New Jersey due to the
special needs of the persons served there.
The Arc
of Monmouth serves 1,350 individuals with mental retardation and their
families each year with education, vocational training, residential
services, health care, supported employment, recreation, social services
and advocacy.
