AUGUST FOR ARC AT PICCOLA ITALIA RESTAURANT
OCEAN – August, 2010: Brian Gualtieri, chef and owner of Piccola Italia in Ocean, invites you to enjoy his mouthwatering unique takes on classic Italian dishes, fusing fresh Mediterranean flavors with the traditional regional styles of Italian cooking on Thursdays throughout August to support The Arc of Monmouth. On Thursdays throughout the month, 25% of all food sales will be donated to The Arc of Monmouth.
“The Arc of Monmouth is an important local organization. We support their Winter Glow Ball each year, and want to do more especially now, in this tough economy where non-profits are really struggling,” said Gualtieri.
“We are so grateful for the support of Piccola Italia,” said Arc of Monmouth Executive Director, Mary Scott. “This is a hard time for us. We are constantly struggling to increase funds. This is a very generous contribution, and we thank Brian Gualtieri for the donation.”
Piccola Italia is located in the Cobblestone Shopping Center, 837 West Park Avenue, Ocean, NJ. The phone number is 732-493-3090, and reservations are recommended.

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES TO RECEIVE AWARD
TINTON FALLS – April, 2010- The Dorothy B. Hersh High School Self Advocacy Group has been selected to receive the “Making the Difference-Group Achievement Award” at the 5th Annual Spring Into Action Luncheon hosted by the New Jersey Self-Advocacy Project.
The students are being presented with this award for their work on the “Spread the Word to end the Word” campaign, a nationwide campaign working hard to remove the word “retarded” from use.
Using notes and a PowerPoint presentation, 8 students with developmental disabilities spoke to two undergraduate classes at Georgian Court University, Cultural Anthropology and Sociology about how the “R” words, “retard” and “retarded,” should be removed from everyday language. Following the presentations, they solidly held a question and answer session with the students.
In addition, some of the students attended the “Rally for Respect” at Rutgers University Busch Campus Center, Piscataway on March 23. This rally brought representatives, students, citizens and self advocates together to end the “R” word.
The criteria for the award includes: 1-A demonstration of teamwork through showing an ability to work cohesively with others towards the common goal of self advocacy; 2-Group meetings must be primarily advocate directed and lead; 3-Group exhibits support for each other in achieving the leadership roles and responsibilities identified by the group; and 4-Group utilizes advisor support effectively.
Dorothy B. Hersh High, is a component of The Arc of Monmouth. Mary Scott, Executive Director of The Arc of Monmouth said, “I am so proud of the Self Advocacy Group at Hersh High. They have taken a very active role in a very important campaign.”
The Dorothy B. Hersh High School is a private school for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities between the ages of 14 and 21. To contact the school, call 732-493-3563.
